Transform Your Upstairs Flat with Mass Loaded Vinyl Insulation
Why Insulate Your Upstairs Flat?
Living in an upstairs flat can sometimes mean dealing with unwanted noise from below. Insulating your space not only enhances your comfort but also improves your quality of life. One effective solution is using Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV), a soundproofing material that can significantly reduce noise transmission.

Step 1: Prepare Your Space
Before you begin, remove all existing flooring. This step is crucial as it allows you to fit the MLV directly on top of most insulation materials, ensuring maximum effectiveness.

Step 2: Install DeciLAM or Deadener VB5
Next, lay down a 3mm layer of DeciLAM or Deadener VB5. Use caulk to fill any gaps and tape the seams for a seamless finish. This installation method provides an impressive 27dB drop in sound pressure, making your flat a quieter and more peaceful environment.

Step 3: Re-lay or Install New Floor Coverings
Once the MLV is in place, you can re-lay your existing floor coverings or opt for new ones (excluding tiles). This final touch not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your flat but also contributes to the overall soundproofing effect.

Enjoy Long-Lasting Comfort
By investing in an acoustic mass loaded vinyl membrane, you’re ensuring comfort and tranquility for many years to come. Say goodbye to disruptive noises and hello to a serene living space!

Case Study - Bath Street, Rugby
A two storey house converted to flats. The first floor apartment had noise issues from the lower floor and visa versa. There were people living uncomfortably and frequent changes in tenants due to the noise issues had the landlord seeking a solution. Fortunately swift contact was made with Paul Neale from Sound Insulations Ltd after finding us online. We proposed the following solution:
- Keep ceiling of downstairs un-touched to reduce costs
- Install DeciLAM Mass Loaded Vinyl throughout the upstairs flooring system
- Re-install new flooring to make the flat more appealing to others
'The plan was to use local contractors and have Paul from Sound Insulations Ltd to guide the proper fitment of the mass loaded vinyl insulation materials. This went off without a hitch and the contractors removed the existing flooring substrates and installed the DeciLAM mass loaded vinyl material with ease'
They were faster than expected once they got the initial process nailed down. It took approximately 2 days for around 80m2 of mass loaded vinyl insulation material to be laid to provide an idea of timing. This included laying the material filling the gaps around the outer wall (where it met the floor boards), sealing the outsides and internal gaps and taping the joints.
